Agency:

European Council on Refugees and Exiles

Return to Daijah's Home Page Where is home base (city/state/country)? ECRE has an office in Brussels, but their work is coordinated in London.

What is key constituency or audience? Refugee assisting non-governmental organizations
What are the agency’s main activities? Policy development and research, legal analysis, to provide information services to members, and network building between South-Eastern, Central, and Eastern Europe
Mission statement? Key goals? The website states, “ECRE is an umbrella organization of 78 refugee-assisting agencies in 31 countries working towards fair and humane policies for the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees.”
Is the agency noticeably pro or con immigration? They are pro immigration for refugees and asylum seekers.
Any publications? (what types, titles) “Report on Legal and Social Conditions for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Western European Countries” published by ECRE/Danish Refugee Council in 2003
“Responding to the Asylum and Access Challenge: An Agenda for Comprehensive Engagement in Protracted Refugee Situations” published by ECRE and U.S. Committee for refugees in April 2003
Names of key spokespersons/officers? General Secretary = Peer Baneke ( I could only find the name of one officer.)
Other issues of interest? ECRE has expressed their concern for the term “super safe third neighboring” countries that is being discussed by the EU Justice and Home Affairs Informal Council. Giving a country this label would enable authorities to deny applicants from these countries asylum. ECRE believes that the safety of a country should be evaluated on a case by case basis.
