Mending Wall

I missed the unveiling of the “Mending Wall” but spent some time investigating its many aspects. The section of the wall that I found most intriguing had many skulls in the desert with a big yellow cartoon bubble with the word “amnesty” in it. I found this particularly interesting because of how my mind has changed to the idea of illegal immigrants crossing the border. Also we have been talking quite a bit in class about the amount of deaths in the desert that separates Mexico and Arizona. I thought that this was a very good depiction of what these Mexican born people go through, and the struggles involved with coming to America. It shows that even when they have arrived in America, and even if they are able to find work, they are still not free like most of us are. They are always trying to hid, always trying to stay. From my point of view, most of the wall sections were devoted to one of two things. It was a dedication to those who have tried to escape Mexico and build a new life here in America, and it showed the devout Catholic faith that most Mexicans are known to have. There was another section that was just a silhouette of the Virgin Mary. I do know from talking to different Mexican men at the day-labor pick up site, and from my interview, that Mexican culture is extremely Catholic, which is one of the reasons they focus so much on their families. I found it very interesting that there was a section of the wall that displayed that.
