My name is Magdalene Cox and I am a student at ASU West.  I will graduate in May of 2004 with a B.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in Sociology. I am a jazz musician and my main instrument is the baritone saxophone, but I also play the drums, clarinet, flute, trombone and I am beginning to learn how to play the guitar.  I am currently an adolescent substance abuse counselor.  After I graduate in May, I plan on continuing my education.  My goal is to be a family counselor, mostly working with the teen population.

I took the Learning from South Phoenix class, to better educate myself.  I have a cousin who lives in South Phoenix, but I rarely go to her house, but thanks to this class, I now know that the stereotyping I hear is not true.  I have learned that South Phoenix has been neglected for to long.  It has been a place for those that are less fortunate to live.  Yet now, the city is trying to fix up South Phoenix. This is great.  Yet, some city planners forget that some people in South Phoenix do not have enough money or credit to qualify for the new houses that are built.  In fact, some of the current residents in South Phoenix feel as though they are trying to be pushed out.

My hope for South Phoenix, is that they continue to build up the community.  South Phoenix has a lot of potential.  I see great things happening.  Yet, the city planners who are planning what South Phoenix is going to be like, need to take into account the people that currently live in South Phoenix.  I hope they attempt to incorporate the current community into their planning.  Such as building more parks, lakes, and public schools.  I can't wait to see what the future brings!
