I would like to thank Dr. K for her
Learning From South Phoenix class. I would also like to thank the
residents of South Phoenix for letting us investigate their wonderful neighborhoods. South Phoenix is truly a remarkable area.
During the six weeks time we spent in South Phoenix, I leaned that this
area displays a magnificent culture tradition and, I think it is a
pity I might
not have ventured to this area if it had not been for this provocative,
innovative course.
We explored South Phoenix in groups, which made
the experience interesting as well as enjoyable (thanks to Vanesa for
doing all the driving). Instead of sitting in a class room, we got
to interact with the people who actually live in these neighborhoods. We stopped at a different
restaurant each week to get a taste of the local cuisine. We saw
old South Phoenix and what is to be the new South Phoenix.
Consequently there are many new developments being built, which may
indeed be the end of old South
Phoenix. The demise of South Phoenix will be a shame, because we will no
longer be able to experience the unique rich Latino culture that this
area enjoys.
I now have the benefit
of a different out look
on South Phoenix. Prior to this class, I have thought of South
Phoenix as an area to say away from, whereas now I look forward to my
next visit.
