My Memory Map

I grew up in Chicago. This is the neighborhood I lived in from 1963-1987. My parents are still in that neighborhood. I moved out from 1987-1993. I briefly moved back to the neighborhood for 6 months and then left for Arizona. My neighborhood was a family neighborhood with lot of kids. Most of us went to the same school and church, which was 4 blocks from our street. My best friend Carrie lived 7 houses from me. When we talk now we are always laughing about something we did when we were growing up. One thing that comes to mind is we were riding our bikes and Carrie for some reason fell off her bike in the middle of the street. The bike fell on top of her and she could not get up. I heard her call me. When I turned around and saw her on the ground with the bike on top of her I started to laugh. What also made this funny was there was a line of cars that could not pass because she was lying in the street with her bike on top of her. I know that may not be so funny to some people, but you have to know my friend Carrie, things always happened to Carrie that were funny (well to her and me they were).

Around the block of our house there was a candy store that was called Joe’s. A lady named Mary worked there. I remember her being a nice lady. We also had a police station around the block across the street from the candy store. My dad’s cousin worked there and we would go visit him. We thought that was cool going to the police station to see a police office. We also had a couple of scary houses near by. One of them was at the end of the block of our street. It was an old mansion. I hated to walk by because we all thought it was haunted. In high school a family moved in that house and I baby sat for them. Sometimes I would get scared being there because I thought I heard noises. When I go back to visit my parents, I see so many changes in the neighborhood. I like to take a walk around the neighborhood and remember the good times I had while living there.
