Observations, Reflections, and Photographs by Matthew Alan Lord

Open Letter to the People of South Phoenix

I encountered landscapes both common and unfamiliar, degraded and well maintained, ancient ("as old as the hills," literally) and brand new in my time in South Phoenix this semester.  This diversity of landscapes was reflected in the people I met.  Their visions of the community carried some common themes.

Without exception, all realized this area is undergoing dramatic transformation.  Only a couple people seemed to fully understand why things were changing (some didn't realize what was changing) or what is planned for the area.  A few expressed unlimited enthusiasm for the future.  Most spoke with varying degrees of optimism.  Some regretted the loss of a slower pace of life, but nearly everyone liked the new services and employment opportunities in the area.

I want to offer encouragement to South Phoenicians, new and old.   Enjoy the variety of landscapes you have.  You have many treasures in your neighborhoods, not the least of which is each other.  If you don't yet know your neighbors, take time to do so.  If it is not yet the community you want it to be, get involved.  Some of those we heard from this semester are living proof that a few dedicated citizens can change the future of South Phoenix.

With Warmest Regards,

Matthew Alan Lord
