Junior Leader Training on Saturday December 11th at Heard Scout Pueblo

All scouts who have completed First Class Rank will be invited to participate in the Junior Leader Training at Heard Scout Pueblo on Saturday December 11th at Heard Scout Pueblo.  This will start at 8:00 A.M.  This is a great opportunity for scouts to learn leadership skills to prepare them to be leaders in the troop as well as in their Aaronic Priesthood responsibilities.  This training is being put on by the Tempe Stake Young Men’s and being coordinated by Dwain Wiltbank the Scoutmaster of Troop 274.  You will receive a packet in the mail with an invitation and instructions to prepare for the training session.  It will be lots of fun with a lot of games and activities that teach leadership skills.  You will also learn the responsibilities of your position in the leadership in the Troop.  If you need a ride Bro. Wilson can take you that morning.

Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge
We will be working on the Citizenship in the Community merit badge during the month of December.  A prerequisite that can be done on your own is to visit a community meeting. Here are links to information on meeting places and times for Tempe Elementary School Board or Tempe City Council Meeting.  Look over and complete as many of these other requirements found at the link below before the meeting as you can.

Here is a list of the requirements on the Merit Badge Web Site.

Troop 174 Cook-off Feast and Extravaganza

We had a great time at the Cook-off Feast on the 20th of November.  7 Dutch Ovens were filled with good food.  We had 2 large pizza’s, Hungarian Potatoes, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Green Chili Casserole, a wonderful Chocolate desert, and a Cherry Chocolate Cake desert.  The Scouts put on a campfire for their parents and families with a camp fire lighting ceremony as well as a skit, songs, and a U.S. flag retiring ceremony as well.  The Scouts came early to plan and practice the campfire program and then we started cooking to be ready for our invited guests.  Scouts also described to the parents and families what they had cooked and dutifully served their own dish as the families came through the line.  Thank you families who came and enjoyed this event with us.

Merit Badges to complete
We work on merit badges as a troop but are typically unable to do all of the requirements

in scout meeting.  The boys will need to follow up on their own to finish up the badge and

visit with the merit badge counselor to pass them off.  Each of them have a blue card that

lists the requirements still needed.  The merit badges we have done recently are:

Computer Merit Badge – Get with Bro. Wilson to pass of 3 simple requirements to

                                           get the badge

Citizenship in the World – Get with Counselor.

Family Life – Get with Counselor – Sis. Hoopes.

The boys should also work on their favorite badges outside of troop meetings.  Many

activities/interests they already do will count towards a badge.

Call or Email Bro. Wilson to get the name and phone number of Merit Badge Counselors.

Items each boy needs to acquire:
Scout Uniform - A shirt, pants and belt can be purchased from the BSA Scout Shop at Southern and Gilbert. They will help you know what patches need to go with it. The troop numbers to get are 174.  These are to be worn at all scout meetings and other formal events. Two t-shirts will be issued which may be worn on campouts and work projects.

Scout Books - The Boy Scout Handbook and the Boy Scout Requirements 2003 book may both be purchased from the BSA Scout Shop. These books are essential to know what needs to be worked on.

Backpack - Each boy must carry a back pack for our back packing trips.  This is actually a good way for them to carry their gear for all troop outings. The troop has two backpacks that may be loaned as needed.

Sleeping Bag and other camping gear - Each boy needs the gear and clothing necessary to be comfortable on our outings. Parents may use their judgment on deciding what is needed. These kinds of items make great birthday and holiday presents.  Feel free to call the leaders for ideas or advice.  The troop has 2 sleeping bags that may be loaned as needed.

Bicycle Helmet - Each boy participating in the troop bike rides must wear a bicycle helmet. Suitable helmets may be purchased at stores such as Target or Walmart or any bike shop.
