Theatrical Productions

A critical vehicle for the international cultural exchange is the theatrical collaboration with the National Theatre in Cluj. During the summer program, the actors perform several pieces for the students, which adapt the works of modern European playwrights to the Romanian perspective and theatrical tradition. Mona Chirila and Cosmin Hodis, two members of the theatre group, also teach drama classes at the Babes Boyai University , and give lectures on Romanian dramaturgy. In 2001 a group of 7 actors came to ASU and performed Memo, a play based on the Romanian literary avant-garde texts of prominent figures such as Eugen Ionesco, Tristan Tzara, Ilarie Voronca, Urmuz and Benjamin Fondaine.

In Februry 2005, the National Theatre of Cluj brought a group of 6 actors to the ASU to perform an adaptation ofTom Soppard's Travesties. Translated into Romanian and published in Bucharest at Uniter, Romania 's foremost theatrical press, this play exposes the revolutionary impact Tristan Tzara had on European literature, the linguistic innovation of James Joyce, and the emergence of socialist ideology in the beginning of the 20th century. Hosted by the Romanian and Central European Collaborative, the play was co-sponsored by ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Humanities division, and the Theatre department at ASU.
