Measurements of dust extinction in highly inclined galaxies

R.A. Jansen, J.H. Knapen, J.E. Beckman, R.F. Peletier and R. Hes have finished their study of the extinction properties of dust in the well-defined dust lanes of three highly inclined galaxies using U, B, V, R and I band CCD and J and K' band Near-Infrared array images.

They find good agreement with the extinction law in our Galaxy and in the Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594).

A Spectroscopic and Photometric Survey of Nearby Field Galaxies

With respect to the problem of galaxy evolution, there is currently no good comparison sample representative of galaxy properties in the nearby universe. R.A. Jansen and M. Franx have selected a magnitude limited sample of 200 nearby field galaxies from the CfA Redshift Survey (Huchra et al. 1983), including galaxies of all types and of all luminosities. They will obtain integrated spectra and B and R images for all galaxies in this sample. The purpose of this study is to obtain an accurate description of the distribution of magnitude, structural parameters, color, and spectral type. The colors and spectral types are necessary to determine the probable evolutionary history of the galaxy. The magnitude and structural parameters (effective radius and surface brightness) are necessary to calculate the detection rates at increasing redshift. This survey will serve as a benchmark for interpreting the spectra and number counts of distant galaxies.

In collaboration with D.G. Fabricant (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, U.S.A.) nuclear and integrated spectra have been obtained for 27 galaxies sofar, using the newly commissioned FAST spectrograph at the 60 inch reflector of the F.L. Whipple Observatory (Arizona). For 50 galaxies Jansen and N. Caldwell (F.L. Whipple Observatory, Smithsonian Institution, Amado, U.S.A.) obtained B and R images using the 48 inch telescope of the same observatory. A subsample of Virgo galaxies, as representative of high-density regions, will be added later.
