Classics Major (BA in International Letters and Cultures: Classics Concentration)

Requirements: Students must complete 45 credits in approved Classics courses to complete the ILC (Classics) Degree, 22 of which must be in upper division (300 and 400 level) courses. Students must maintain a 2.34 or higher GPA in all course work, and at least a 3.0 GPA in the target language. Within their 45 credits, students are responsible for fulfilling the following minimum requirements to earn the ILC (Classics) Degree:
I) Ancient Language Requirement. Students must choose a target language, either ancient Greek or Latin, and complete either 23 credit hours in ancient Greek language or 22 credit hours in Latin language.

    • For ancient Greek: students must take GRK 101, GRK 201, and PHI 301, and then take GRK 301 and 302 (which may be repeated for credit), for a total of 23 credits
    • For Latin: students must take LAT 101, 102, 201 and 202 and then take LAT 421, 422, or 494 (which may be repeated for credit), for a total of 22 hours.
    • Combining languages cannot complete this requirement (for instance, students may not take 4 semesters of ancient Greek and 2 semesters of Latin). Students may, however, choose to take the other language (or more of the target language) to fulfill electives as described below.

II) Course work in History: 6 hours.
Students must complete 2 courses (6 credits) in Classical history. It is recommended for students who have Latin as their target language to take Roman history, and those with Greek for their target language to take Greek history. However, students may choose, and may also mix and match (such as one course in Roman and one course in Greek history) to fulfill this requirement.
III) Course work in the School of International Letters and Cultures: 9 hours.
Students must complete SLC 201, SLC 202 and SLC 498 (or its equivalent) for a total of 9 credits. SLC 194 Introduction to Classics (a one-credit course) is also recommended for ILC (Classics) Majors.
IV) Electives.
Students may choose from the Approved Electives list to complete their 45 credits. Students may use additional Greek and Latin language courses to meet this requirement. Additional courses may also be approved by the Sub-Coordinator for Classics. Courses submitted for approval must be primarily (at least 50%) about Classical Studies. Students must be prepared to submit a detailed syllabus for courses submitted for approval.
