CITIES: COMPLEX ADAPTIVE BIOSOCIAL SYSTEMS
Cities
are not only the drivers
of the global environment and economy, but are
home to over half the world's
population. In many aspects cities are the ideal superorganism
to study - a complex adaptive system
with intricately interwoven social and ecological subsystems.
Cities are also the engines of innovation and economic creativity with
superlinear scaling of creative attributes vs. population size. Thus,
understanding and sustaining cities is critical to several fields of
science as well as to policy makers at multiple levels of governance.
