Observations
Goal:
to gather information about a topic through observing details of sight, sound,
taste, touch and smell
Time: 40 minutes
There are many writing tasks that will require you to report a scene or situation
excatly as you viewed it. Some real life examples would be taking meeting
minutes or describing the scene of an accident to a police officer. Some
writing examples are using personal experience in an argumentative essay in
order to appeal to emotions or describing a workplace in an analysis of cultural
and social attitudes. No matter the purpose, keen observation skills will
be helpful to you in many ways.
For this activity
you are asked to observe a workplace, keeping a clear purpose in mind.
You will be asked to analyze the place from two points of view: the view of
the customer and the view of the employee. Your observation should record
all sensory detail, including conversations and other sounds. You can use
