Goal:  to determine popular opinion on controversial topics

It is often useful to understand public opinion on controversial topics before making arguments about them. For instance, if I am making an argument about the No Child Left Behind Policy, it would help me to know what percentage of the US population supports it, and what percentage ofthe US population does not. Having this knowledge can help me maintain a reasonable tone in my paper, and it can also be useful evidence in my argument.

There are several independant public polling companies that routinely conduct polls and publish results. The following list gives links to many of those organizations. You may need to narrow or broaden your topic depending on its level of specificity. For instance, if you are writing on germ cell engineering you may not find a specific poll on it. You can search for stem cell research or any other realted broader topic.
