401/402 paired option Teaching Initiatives
"Power, Politics, and Social Change"
Dave will be teaching his paired BIS 402 course "Power, Politics, and Social Change." In the course, which runs concurrently with the legislature, students can, if desired, combine applied study internships with organizations involved in the political process. The course includes many guest speakers including legislators. The course is offered every Spring.

Dave writes columns for the Southeast Valley Opinions of the Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune.. Dave's students often join him in implementing research projects. He's appeared twice on KAET's Horizon to discuss projects students were involved in.
He's also active on the ground. Currently he's working with community members on improving Tempe's approach to the homelesss, while keeping a vigilant eye on our state legislature. Every semester he normally has some 401 students doing a directed study and/or interning with him. If interested, look here!.

Leader in Learning Centered Education:
Dave has been a two-time outstanding faculty member at ASU and participated in Arizona Board of Regents' Learning Centerned Education Initiative. His syllabi illustrate many leading components of Learning Centered Education, while combining a participatory framework that involves shared accountability of instructor to students.

Leader in Experiential Education
Dave is a firm believer in learning by doing. Beyond "doing" in the classroom, the aim is to also have you link classroom ideas with outside expereinces and vice versa. Dave has a firm commitment to improving our community, and many of his research methods classes have had class projects partnering with nonprofit organizations to help them reach their goals.
