NOTE: In reporting the averages from the test we drop the lowest scores. This is because 25% (2 out of 8) of all scores will eventually be dropped. In comparing your average with the class average you need to compare with an average which is representative of the final average. Dropping the lowest scores before reporting the average is one way of ESTIMATING the effect of the final drops. These posted test averages are not used in any way in computing the final overall class average. With this final average, the final grade scale is 49.9 - 59.7 D 59.8 - 73.4 C no C+'s this year 73.5 - 81.5 B (below 75.7 is B-, above 79.4 is B+) 81.6 and up A (below 82.4 is A-, above 91.2 is A+) with below 49.9 as E. This final scale was selected so as to find gaps in the distribution. With the scale as given above the highest E is 46.2, the lowest D is 49.9, the the highest D is 58.7, the lowest C is 59.8, the highest C is 71.4, the lowest B is 74.5, the highest B is 80.2, and the lowest A is 81.6. The smallest gap between levels is 1.1 points between D and C. Letter grades were assigned strictly based on this scale. Be sure to check your TA's computation of your final grade.
