As the linguistic and cultural diversity of the college student population
continues to intensify, an increasing number of writing teachers, researchers
and administrators are facing the challenge--and the privilege--of working with
second language writers.
In recognition of this trend, the Executive Committee of the Conference on
College Composition and Communication approved the creation of the CCCC
Committee on Second Language Writing in the fall of 1998.
The goal of the Committee is to integrate the second-language perspective
into the institutional practices of CCCC and to develop resources for CCCC
members. The Committee's charges include:
-
Serving as an official liaison between CCCC and
TESOL (Teachers of English
to Speakers of Other Languages);
-
Developing a position statement concerning second language writing issues;
-
Identifying, developing and providing resources for CCCC members; and
-
Putting forth recommendations for the Executive Committee on issues related to
second language writing.
The Committee has developed the CCCC Statement on
Second Language Writing and Writers, which was adopted by the CCCC
Executive Committee in November 2000 and endorsed by the Board of Directors of
Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) in February 2001.
The statement was published in the June 2001 issue of College Composition
and Communication.
In addition, the Committee has been encouraging the planning of
events and activities related to second language writing at CCCC,
including workshops and the Special Interest Group on Second Language
Writing.
