Course Overview

All in all, my awareness of the issues surrounding immigration and emigration have definitely been broadened.   Although I have lived in other countries, our trip to Nogales was an eye opener.  I enjoyed the time spent with our lunch host much more than any other part. The time spent asking her questions and hearing honest humble answers about her family and tremendous pride to live where she does.  It was even more of a privilege because I had the opportunity to translate most of the questions posed by the students as well as the answers from our host.

The other main highlight of this course for me was when we learned about refugees, and had the representatives of the IRC present us with the reality behind refugees. To me, when comparing refugees to immigrants, refugees seem to have such a higher level of gratitude for their new home country.  Refugees are more willing to acclimate to their new environment, and accept the new laws, cultures and customs before them.  The personal stories were incredible, and the young lady that opened and introduced the IRC was extremely well informed and painted a reality in my mind by inviting us to think what we would do if at that moment, rebels were coming to attack us at the school.
