Interview 2After so many years of living in my country I decided to cross the border again but this time my journey was heading to Phoenix. Crossing the Border through the desert was a whole different experience than the first time I came in. You see the first time that I cross the border was in 1986, and at that time the border was not as duro para pasar (hard to pass) as it is now. Then you would just pay a coyote $100 to $500 so they would pass you to the U.S and that was all. Now you have to pay from $1000 to $1500-- that’s almost a year's pay.
My journey to the United States was a milagro (miracle) because I thought that I had everything planned, I would pay the pollero (coyote) what they asked for and then cross the border. As soon as I crossed I would find a job and would start to work and build my family a descent house. This time my goal was to support my wife and my two kids.
When crossing the desert I thought that the border patrol would never stop us, we were so close and this had to happen… There were at least five of us risking our life to immigrate to another country that isn’t ours, just to have an opportunity that our country wasn’t able to offer us. When I heard the pollero scream, Run! Run! Run! I did, I ran as fast as I could without realizing that I would end up in the desert. Lucky for me I was not alone two other guys followed me. I was so scared because I didn’t know where or how would I returned to my country, I was scared of not seeing my family anymore, my kids and my wife. I decided to walk; I walked at least four days.
