First figure your homework grade. Your HW percentage is your total
number of HW points divided by the number of HW points which are possible.
There are about 3500 possible HW points for the entire semester. However,
we will figure the final HW percentage out of only 3150 points (or about
90% of all possible points should the number of possible points change).
Since we decided not to use any written HW problems this semester, there
were only 3300 total HW points for the semester; the final HW percentage
is figured out of only 2970 points.

Your WebAssign "All Assignments" link gives you your total WebAssign
points for each of the Homework Assignments for the year. The total number
of HW points (not including the five Extra Credit Assignments) is your total
number of WebAssign HW points for the semester. To this total, you must add
the points earned in the two Extra Credit Opportunities of the semester.
This is done for you in our HW grades page. As an example, say you have
earned 2538.6 WebAssign points, and you participated in one Extra Credit
Opportunity, for which you received 75 points. Your total HW points for
the semester would then be 2538.6 + 75.0 = 2613.6 since there were no
written HW's this semester.

With 2613.6 HW points for the semester your HW percentage would be:

                      2613.6/2970 = 88.0%

HW is worth 14 points overall, so you would have earned 12.32 HW points
(i.e. 88.0% of 14)

1200 HOMEWORK POINTS ARE REQUIRED FOR A PASSING GRADE IN THE COURSE.
LESS THAN 1200 HOMEWORK POINTS IS AN AUTOMATIC E.

Now figure your Turning Point grade. There are expected to be about
50 Turning Point questions over the course of the semester, so the maximum
possible Turning Point score will be about 150 points. The final Turning
Point grade will be determined as a percentage out of 135 points (or about
90% of all possible TP points should the number of possible TP points
change). There ended up being 69 TP questions, for a total possible TP
score of 207 points; the final grade was determined as a percentage of
185 points (89.4% of all possible TP points) Say you have earned 154
Turning Point points for the semester. Your Turning Point percentage
would then be

                       154/185 = 83.2%.

Turning Point is worth 5 points overall, so your TP points for the
semester are 4.16 (83.2% of 5).

OK, now figure your recitation grades. We grade quizzes out of
25 points and we take your best 3 of 4 quizzes. Say your best 3 quizzes
total up to 55 points. Your Quiz Average is then

                       55/75 or 73.3%.

Quizzes are worth 7.0 points total, so your Quiz points for the semester
are 5.13 (73.3% of 7).

We grade group exercises out of 10 points and we take your best
9 out of 10 group exercises. Say your best 9 group exercises total up
to 81 points. Your exercise average is then

                       81/90 or 90.0%

Exercises are worth 4.0 points total, so your Exercise point for the
semester are 3.60 (90.0% of 4).

Now figure your test total. Take your best 3 MC test scores, add
them all, divide by 45.00, and then multiply by 50.0. For example, say
your MC grades are 13.5, 11.0, 9.0, and 13.0. Your test average is then

                   (14.0+11.0+13.0)/45 = 84.4%

We now multiply by 50 since the Tests are worth 50 points overall.

                   0.844 times 50 = 42.22

OK, now you have your pre-exam total.

             HW 12.32
             TP 4.16
             Exercise 3.60
             QUIZ 5.13
             TEST 42.22
                       -------
       pre-exam total 67.43

The pre-exam maximum is 80 points, so your pre-exam percentage is

               67.43/80 = 84.28%

The final exam is 40 MC questions and counts for 20 points
in your overall average. Your final exam score is simply the
number correct, out of 40; therefore, you only need to add
half of your final exam score to your pre-exam total to get
your overall total score. For example, if you score 30/40
on the Final Exam, you would add 15 points to your pre-exam
total to get your overall average.

       pre-exam total 67.43 points
exam score 30/40 15.00 exam points
                                 -------
average with exam 82.43 points overall

This semester, since we were cooperating with other
sections, and since all cooperating sections offered
a possible 5.0 points extra credit, you had the opportunity
to earn 5.0 more points with WebAssign Extra Credit HW
assignments; 50 points were possible, and your extra
credit score is one-tenth of that total. Say you earned
38.5 points on the WebAssign Extra Credit Assignments;
then your extra credit addition would be 3.85 points,
for a final overall point total of

average with exam 82.43 points overall
       extra credit 3.85 points
                                 -------
                                 86.28 total points

This semester, we have a fixed grade scale as posted
from the beginning of the year. Any student who earns 80% of
all possible points can expect to receive an A of some type
(A-, A, or A+); students who earn 65-80% of all possible points
can expect to receive some type of B, and students who earn
50-65% of all possible points can expect to receive a C or C+.
See the Final Histogram on our Overall Grades page to see where
the final plus-minus cutoffs lie. Thanks. GBA
