Chinese Cultural Center

The Chinese Cultural Center (44th & Washington St) was founded in 1997 by the China National Cereals, Oils and Foodstuff Import and Export Corporation, a.k.a. COFCO.  The shops at the Chinese Cultural Center sell authentic antiques, works of art, Asian artifacts, furniture, food, jewelry, and souvenirs. The 99 Ranch Asian Supermarket has a variety of Asian products and ingredients. Outside there is two-acre traditional Chinese garden. This center not only accommodates the growing Asian community here in Phoenix but tourists as well. When I went to the Chinese Cultural Center of course a majority of people there were Asian, it had a distinct smell (mainly of fish) and the atmosphere there just made me feel uncomfortable simply because it was foreign to me. COFCO is one of the largest Chinese importer and exporter of food products in the U.S. By 2003, COFCO's total import and export value had reached US$78.5 billion for exports and US$68.3 billion for imports.
