Letter to Readers

Hello Readers!

Welcome to my Migration & Culture web portfolio.  I hope these pages I created will help share my experiences in this class and shed some light on current migration issues.  Right now I’d like to take a moment and tell you a little bit about what I learned.

The occurrence of migration stems from a wide range of factors influencing an individual’s decision to leave their home country ~from the words of our professor Dr. Koptiuch; we successfully ‘unpack the meaning to the phrase “in search of a better life.”’

Social, economic, and political processes were examined in the migration and culture of societies, helping explain the in-depth reasons as to why people truly migrate.  Voyages: from Tongan Villages to American Suburbs and New Pioneers in the Heartland: Hmong Life in Wisconsin are just a couple of books from a varied list that students read in class.  The books focused on migrant stories and the impacts their migration has on societies and culture.

If I had to decide what aspect of migration and culture I found most interesting throughout this course I would have to say the profound impact globalization is having on people’s way of life; from small villages to overpopulated cities cultures are mixing and changing.  Although globalization has some benefits it also has downfalls.
