Why Migration and Culture?Dear All Interested Parties: "Today looks like a good day to change my life....." Juan's Story The Bus let us off at the boarder that exists between the U.S. and Mexico. I was having second thoughts, but Raul my older brother told me that we had no choice. "We have to go at night. The cover of darkness will protect us." I knew he was right. We could not afford to fail this time. Mom is getting sicker, and we have to let dad know. We have to go and get jobs to send money home so she can see a doctor. We have no choice. A long time ago my family was farmers, but long since then men have had to travel great distances and be away from their families for many years just to keep food in the bellies of his children. The mother land has long grown barren and not even cactus grows some areas. We have to go and find work. There are no jobs here. The few that are available don't pay well and are very far away from home. Consuela's Story I have two small children, and I haven't seen my husband in almost nine months. It's been so long that if I weren't pregnant I would not know the time. Last month with the money to live on he sent a letter to me. "Take a bus to the boarder. Bring the children. Our new son must be born in America. He will then be a citizen and have rights. It is better here. Come at night. There is a man at the corner shop, give him this money and he will bring you and the children to me. Do as he says and I will see you soon my love. Always on my mind." My mother said I should not go. She thinks it is too dangerous. My father thinks this man I am not meet may not be such a good man. He has heard bad things about him. He says he may very well be a coyote. My husband saved many months for us to come, and worked hard to arrange us coming, I must go. What do I bring? This is just a sample of the many things that a immigrant or migrant and just a preview of the many things that is going on there lives. Who knows what's going through their minds? Who knows what fears they may have to face? They may not know anyone, or understand anything what is happing. This is just a sample of what might be going threw their minds. John Johnson's Story It's about 6pm on a Sunday night, right around sundown. This is the time to be on our toes. It the beginning of the night rush. I have my trusty side kick by my side, I like to call him colt for short. My colt 45 will protect me out her in the desert of boarder. My friends are with me and we are volunteering our time to protect the under protected boarders. There just aren't enough guards. These people are sneaking threw and taking jobs away from Americans. These jobs are the reason why so many Americans are on welfare. They can't find a job because the immigrants have stolen them all. These immigrants are draining tax payers money and recourses. If the government won't do something to stop it, then By Golly, I will. I am a Minute Man, ready to protect the nations boarder in a minutes time. Call on me in a minutes time, and I'll stand sold with my brothers and sister in this fight against the war with Mexico. They are invading every day by the thousands, if I won't stand up to stop it, who will? This class was a very interesting experience. The teacher is very out going and the class is pretty laid back. I learned so much in this class that I did not know before. I developed a respect for immigrants and all that they go threw to become members for our country. The quality of life in many countries is not really explained or viewed in our culture. If your a student and thinking of taking this class, do it! If your just a surfer checking out my page because of my last name, well then, I hope you can learn something from it.
This class has many assignments, but threw each one you learn more about the immigrants and yourself. The teacher knows what her stuff, and is really passionate about the issue of migration and the culture of not only these migrants but also the refugees, illegal immigrants, legal immigrants, and the information about all of these peoples. The course has many interesting movies, books, and other media/ activity that really grabs your attention. |
