This chapter provides an overview of key issues and concepts in writing theory, research and instruction with a focus on second language writing. We begin by demystifying various assumptions about writing in applied linguistics. Next, we discuss theories of writing in terms of three aspects of writing—including relational, strategic and textual aspects of writing. We then provide an overview of second language writing theory, research and pedagogy, focusing on English as a second or foreign language.
