Thank you

I have to admit I was not sure what to expect from this class.  Classes like this one are normally boring in nature due to the amount of dry reading involved.  However the way and manner Dr. K presented the material made it not only fun and exciting but real and informative.  The class trip to Nogales was truly a wonderful experience.  The trip was not only fun but it gave us a chance to explore the issues of immigration from the Mexican prospective.

I had been to Mexico many times before but the trip that I took to Nogales for this class was a true eye opening experience.  Before this trip I guess you could say I was ignorant to the horrible living conditions that exist only a few hours away in Nogales.  The poor Mexican maquiladora workers that work 10-12 hours a day for close to nothing really got my attention.  These people work harder then many Americans do without any of the same benefits that so many of us take for granted.  I only wish more Americans would experience the truly remarkable people of Mexico.

Perhaps the biggest misconception that this class helped in dismissing, was the idea that illegal immigration is only isolated in the Western Hemisphere.  Rather the issue of migration legal/illegal is caused by economic conditions, war, famine, etc...and when you have richer nations bordering developing nations the issue over immigration is sure to follow.

The issues and concerns over migration discussed in this class will probably never be answered.  However the best weapon we have for fighting intolerance and ignorance is information.  Classes like this one don’t help solve the world’s problems, rather they help educate and dismiss stereotypes and hearsay, and perhaps that is precisely what is
