Report on Faux Borders

   Migrants in the city.

Phoenix is an incredibly culturally enriched city. Being so close to Mexico, it is easy to find many places where America ends and Mexico begins. I like to call these faux borders. They are all over the Phoenix area. The faux border I wish to discuss is the one I grew up in. This is Guadalupe. Here, just south of Tempe, Mexico comes alive. This small area is filled with Mexican heritage. My elementary school, Conquistador lies in the center of this area. I grew up surrounded by Spanish speakers, and became aware of many Chicano festivities. My favorite is El Dia De Los Muertos, the day of the dead. On this day, the souls of the dearly departed are welcomed back with music, gifts, and many other honors. I like this Chicano celebration the most because it celebrates the dead rather than mourning.
