(crossing the valley) Fate With Johnny Chu

                                                      Migrant Interview

For my interview I decided to interview Mr. Johnny Chu. Johnnie is my boss at his restaurant, Fate. My husband and I used to come in for dinner, and now I am serving food as a waitress there. Johnny was very creative when he put Fate together. He is an artist as well as a successful business owner. Johnnie likes to support local artists, and displays their work in his restaurant.

Johnny is from Hong Kong China. He came here when he was twelve years old. I asked Johnnie why he moved to the United States, and he replied: “For my Grandmother. My Family.” Johnny told me that his parents wanted to be with family, so they moved here. I then asked Johnnie what he used to do back home before he became such a successful businessman. Johnny replied: “Before twelve years old, there is not much. Everything started after I got here.” I then asked him what he missed about home. Johnny replied: “The people. People here are not open minded. They got to school and end up dropping out to be an artist. People back home believe in a dream and they make it happen.” Johnny then went on: “Nothing is impossible if I can make it happen.”

Johnny believes strongly that a person should live their dream and not be confined to a way of life that will make you unhappy. Johnny believes that people should not live their life according to someone else’s rules. “God gave you life, but you make the decisions.” Johnny believes that God does not control us. Also, that people should not lead their life by what a religion tells you.

Johnny Chu is a very interesting person to talk to and to work for. At lunchtime Johnny will make us lunch. He puts his heart into his cooking, and it always turns out wonderful. Of all the people I have met, Johnny is one of the most interesting and intelligent.
