Seven Fridays in South Phoenix
Observations, Reflections, and
Photographs by Matthew Alan Lord
South Phoenix
By Bus Photographic Essays
As I mentioned, I rode every bus route in South Phoenix and
environs, seeing the community from a vantage point unfamiliar to
most Phoenicians. The photos were taken while riding the bus
and while waiting for the next bus or to transfer from one line to
another. Many of the images were shot while in motion,
conveying the whirlwind of changes in the South Phoenix landscape.
Many are blurred, especially the night shots. These are here
by design, as I intend them to mirror the sense of vertigo that Dr.
Koptiuch discussed in the course
While a passenger, I took three types of photographs. For the
first, I shot whatever caught my eye inside the bus or in the
surrounding landscape. The second and third types of images I
shot every time the driver or automated announcer called out an
intersection or destination. Each time that happened, I
systematically photographed the interior (a wide shot) and then
immediately zoomed in on the view through the front window.
I have organized the photographs here in two ways. If
you click on the table below, you will be taken to web pages for the
corresponding routes. You will get the entire run of images
shot as I experienced the ride. If you click
here, you will be taken
to a slide show that I have culled from the hundreds taken during
this project.
