Debate on:
The First-Year Writing Requirement
Hosted by PFF (Preparing Future Faculty)
ASU professors of rhetoric, Sharon Crowley
and John Ramage will lead a debate/discussion on political and historical
issues and arguments in the administration and teaching of a common undergraduate
requirement.. ... a requirement, it has often been argued, that provides
students access to academic literacy or encultures them into the institution--depending
on how you look at it.
It is a course requirement that is loved, hated,
endured, and privileged by university students, instructors, administrators,
legislators, and the general public, and for over 100 years has remained
controversial and often little understood. It is The First-Year Writing
Requirement (affectionately known far and wide also as Freshman Comp. or
English 101). Please plan to join us for what promises to be a lively discussion.
The debate will be moderated by Professor Mark
Lussier, Director of Graduate Studies, ASU Department of English.
