I have been a graduate student in the Neuer lab since August 2005. My research is in marine plankton ecology and involves investigating the contributions of different phytoplankton taxa to the downward flux of carbon. To do this I am employing molecular biology techniques including cloning and sequencing and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) along with microscopy and flow cytometry to compare the community structure though the upper water column with particles collected in sediment traps below the mixed layer. Our study sites for this project are located in the Subtropical North Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands.
