1. Poseidon

One of the main research tools in Oceanography is the research vessel. The Neuer group participated in a research cruise to the northern Canary Islands on the German research vessel FS Poseidon from 8-18 March 2005. Most of our work was conducted around the European time series station ESTOC. Water depth there is about 3600 m. The work on the ship which hosted many groups from different institutions consisted of surface water sampling of CO2, water column sampling with rosettes, measurement of water column profiles of salinity, temperature and oxygen, and testing and deployments of large moorings containing particle traps and sensors for carbon dioxide, oxygen and nutrients. We were involved in collecting samples to characterize the phytoplankton community, and in conducting short term particle trap deployments with free-drifting traps.
