6. Poseidon: Funnel Particle Traps

These 2 m tall funnels are large particle taps that will be attached to moorings in the water column in different depths (at ESTOC typically at 500 m, 100m, 3000m) often for many months up to more than a year. Packets of buoys hold the mooring upright in the water column and a 1 ton weight made up of 3 railroad wheels ankers it on the sea floor. The sample bottles are below the funnels and can be moved in preprogrammed time-intervals to collect particles that sink through the water column.
